During a recent get-together my daughter had with some gal pals, I learned several things.
#1 Six 11-year-old girls are not quiet and may not sleep at all. And you will not be quiet or sleep at all either. But they offer wisdom into their generation beyond what any google search, survey or scientific research can offer. Need to know more about your child? Have a sleep over with some of his or her bestest peeps. If your child is a girl, offer to give them pedicures or manicures. They will chat openly about soooo many things and you can soak it all in (having secret heart attacks every so often). It's funny but I pour my heart and soul out to my hair dresser in the same fashion. This is obviously instinctual among girls and women.
#2 I learned that my daughter and son's animosity towards one another is normal. They fight like cats and dogs and so do all her friends with their siblings. This is the way of life. They think their siblings are annoying and "unnecessary". Yes this word was actually used. But when pressed about what if someone else was bothering their siblings, all the girls agreed they would stick up for their sister or brother even though they are so lame sometimes. I guess blood is thicker than water. Thank goodness.
#3 "BFF" or Best Friends Forever is not as good as "BFFL" or Best Friends For Life. I argued the point that forever is longer than life but in an 11-year-olds mind, not so. I asked what about after death? Does the friendship just end at death? What about when you go to heaven? I was reminded that that is a type of life - the after life. Touche. It was agreed that the term BFF is soooo out-dated.
#4 What goes on while you are away from the house, stays in the Photo Booth videos until you discover them years later. And holy cow are they funny. Even if they include whacking furniture with a light saber for five minutes straight or viciously fighting with your brother, it will be difficult punish the offenders. I think I will just post one as a form of punishment.
